3 Dangers of Gutter Damages on Your South Carolina Home

leaves in gutter

Gutters are installed to collect water from your roof and send it through a downspout away from your home. When gutters become damaged or clogged with leaves and other debris, they don’t function properly. This is because water in damaged and clogged gutters is forced to drain wherever it finds an opening. Typically, this means that the water will seep into undesirable places in your home. There are three major dangers of gutter damage that can cause leaks and other issues within your home. Learn about these dangers and contact a Premiere Roofing expert to assess the current condition of your gutters.

1. Roof and Siding

Overflowing gutters can lead to expensive roof and siding damage. If water cannot properly flow away from the home through the gutter system, it will create pools on your roof that can seep into your home, damaging shingles, creating roof cracks, buckling your siding, and rotting your wooden exterior. In our experience, damaged or clogged gutters can cause water to find its way inside your home. This typically causes water damage to occur in the attic or upper floors of your home. Don’t let gutters cause water damage to your home, call a professional to inspect your gutters.

2. Foundation

If water can’t properly flow away from your home through your gutter system, it’ll run down and cause unwanted pressure on your home’s foundation. Too much water can lead to foundational cracks. These cracks are dangerous and can threaten the structural integrity of your home. Over time, if these cracks are not addressed, they can lead to sinking floors and other issues in your home. It’s important to check your gutters to ensure that they’re properly draining water away from your home to prevent foundation issues.

3. Mold and Mildew

Water seeping into your home from gutter damages or clogs commonly results in mold and mildew. Mold can spread to wood, paper, carpet, and insulation as it grows. If mold and mildew problems are not addressed promptly, they can eventually affect your entire house. Since South Carolina experiences heat and humidity for a good portion of the year, a mold or mildew problem can occur at any time. If you find mold or mildew in your home, contact a roofing professional to make sure that your gutters are not the source of the issue.

Many people don’t think about gutter maintenance until they notice water showing up in unexpected places within or outside of their home. If you don’t give your gutters TLC, your home and property may sustain serious damage. Be sure to get your gutters seasonally cleaned and routinely inspected.

Just want to thank you and your crew for the excellent job you did on my "sad" roof. It looks great & best of all, no leaks around the chimney. Bill was impressed with the post roof clean-up.
