Metal Roof vs. Shingles – What are the Pros and Cons?

metal roof vs shinglesMany homeowners, when faced with roof replacement, must consider a metal roof vs. shingles. Which is better? What are the pros and cons? We’ve put together a quick guide to the best roofing material for your home.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofs are gaining momentum as a choice for homes in South Carolina. There are a lot of benefits to metal roofing. They’re fire-resistant, can stand up to extreme weather, are durable with a lifespan up to 50 years, and come in various colors and metal materials. They’re also low-maintenance and eco-friendly.

There are some downsides to a metal roof vs. asphalt shingles. The installation is more complex and requires experienced roofing professionals and specific techniques to do it right. Though the lifetime cost is lower, the upfront cost is significantly more than asphalt shingles, and because the purchase and installation cost is higher, your insurance costs could increase.

Asphalt Shingle Roofing

Many homeowners assume asphalt shingles are the best roofing material simply because it’s the most common. Asphalt shingle roofs are affordable with a lower upfront cost than metal, and they’re easy and quick for a roofing company to install. More roofing companies work with shingles and can install them than metal roofs.

The cons to shingle roofs include a shorter life expectancy, typically only 10-20 years, vs. the 50+ of a metal roof. Shingle roofs also cost more long-term because they need more frequent replacement, they’re heavier than metal, and they come in a limited number of colors.

F-Wave Shingle Roofing

Another option that’s relatively new to the market is F-Wave shingles. They differ from traditional asphalt in that they are a synthetic product engineered to last longer, stand up to extreme weather conditions, and have a fire-resistance rating. In addition, they are UV resistant, so they don’t fade, and they don’t absorb heat as asphalt shingles do. They’re a great option if you like the look of shingles but want something with benefits like a metal roof.

The main cons of F-Wave shingle roofing are the upfront cost of materials and installation, which are higher than asphalt, and because they’re newer, there are fewer design options.
