If your roof is damaged by a storm, fire or other disaster, your homeowner’s insurance may cover the cost of replacing it. However, in order to ensure you don’t get stuck with the bill, you need to submit a claim timely and efficiently. Here’s a look at the roof insurance claim process:
If possible, as soon as the damage occurs, you should make notes about what happened and when it happened. Take pictures of the roof storm damage. Take them from windows and the ground rather than climbing onto a damaged roof. Also, go into your attic or crawl space to see if there are any leaks or other signs of damage from the inside.
Find your insurer’s claim number, and call your agent to see if damage to your roof is covered on your policy. Make this call as soon as possible after the damage has occurred. There may be a statute of limitations after which damage claims are invalid.
In most cases, your insurer assigns an examiner to look over your case. The examiner may ask you to fill out a claims form or provide proof (pictures, etc.) of the damage. If the examiner approves the initial claim, he or she assigns a claims adjuster to your claim. From there the adjuster prepares a repair estimate.
While you are waiting for the insurance company to approve the claim, start to look for roofers in your area. Ideally, you want an experienced licensed or bonded roofer with a positive rating with the Better Business Bureau. Ask the roofer to examine your roof for damage, and if you are still in the midst of your claims process, consider submitting some of the roofer’s statements to the insurance adjuster to bolster your claim.

In many cases, the claims adjuster may request to meet with you to assess your roof. Ask the adjuster if a roofing contractor should also be present. Some adjusters prefer talking with the roofer whom you plan to hire, while others like to create their own estimates of the repair costs and review contractor’s estimates later.
Once the adjuster has inspected your roof, it’s time to schedule the repair. In many cases, you can authorize your insurer to pay the roofing company directly, and you simply pay your deductible to the roofing company. In other cases, your insurer may send you a check for the repairs which you can then give to Premiere Roofing.
